Time and time again, you’ve heard the advice to drink more water. Two to three litres a day is essential for optimal skin and body health — BUT did you actually know why? Why your Skin Therapist is constantly checking on your water intake?
Put simply, your skin is an organ. It has multiple layers, functions and tiny “micro-factories” all working hard 24/7 to keep your skin healthy, strong and functioning properly. But here’s the interesting part, your skin is also the VERY LAST organ in the body to receive hydration from the water you drink… the very last!
Only around 15% of your water intake actually reaches your skin, and trust us, it needs every drop. Hydration goes far beyond visible signs like dark circles, dullness or crepey skin. Your keratinocytes (skin cells) are largely made up of water, meaning the amount you drink directly affects their size, shape and overall function.
Each skin cell is also surrounded by a lipid (oil) barrier, which helps lock hydration into the skin and prevent transepidermal water loss (dehydration). Together, hydration and healthy lipids create your skin’s protective barrier, known as the acid mantle. Without a strong barrier, inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, eczema, chronic dryness and sensitivity can become much harder to manage.
Hydration is also crucial for healthy skin cell turnover, helping older cells naturally shed and exfoliate efficiently, keeping your skin soft, smooth and radiant.
Think of it like this: skin lacking in Essential Fatty Acids becomes dehydrated and compromised. Instead of skin cells sitting flat and tightly packed together, they begin to curl and separate, much like a dried up leaf. This creates tiny gaps in the skin barrier, allowing moisture to escape while also letting bacteria, allergens and irritants enter more easily.
It also means active skincare ingredients can penetrate too quickly and unevenly, leading to increased sensitivity, redness and reactive skin conditions.
This is why combining adequate water intake with a high quality Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) supplement is so important for achieving optimal skin health and better treatment results. When your skin cells are properly nourished and hydrated, they respond more efficiently to active products and professional skin treatments, meaning faster healing, improved results and longer-lasting outcomes.
At Cronulla Skin Sanctuary, we love DMK EFA Ultra for internal skin support. It contains premium ingredients including Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Mekabu Seaweed (rich in fucoidans), Evening Primrose Oil and Seabuckthorn Oil — delivering Omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 Essential Fatty Acids.
Because the body cannot produce Essential Fatty Acids on its own, it relies entirely on what we consume through our diet and supplementation.
Topical Essential Fatty Acids are equally beneficial for supporting a healthy skin barrier. DMK Seba-E Oil and Herbal Pigment Oil both help restore hydration and strengthen the skin’s natural protective barrier. When paired with Herb & Mineral Mist, they mimic your skin’s own barrier function — making them especially beneficial during the cooler months when dryness, redness and sensitivity are more common.
Seba-E Oil is ideal for dry, sensitive and reactive skins needing oil-water balance restoration, while Herbal Pigment Oil provides the added benefit of supporting pigmentation correction, improving rough texture and increasing healthy cell turnover.
So once again — drink the water and take your EFAs! Healthy, hydrated skin functions better, heals better and simply looks better.
If you’re unsure which products or supplements are best suited to your skin, our experienced Skin Therapists are always here to help guide you with personalised advice and treatment recommendations.
