Skin Hydration and why we all need Essential Fatty Acids!

Instagram

Time and time again, you’ve heard the advice to drink more water. Two to three litres a day is essential for optimal skin and body health, BUT did you actually know why? Why your Skin Therapist is constantly checking on your water intake?? Well it’s because of this - put simply, your skin is an organ. It has many layers and facets and functions and individual micro-factories, working hard 24/7. And, its also the VERY LAST organ to receive any amount of hydration from the water that you drink.... THE VERY LAST!

Only about 15% of your water intake ever reaches your skin, and boy, does it need it! It goes way beyond the visible signs of dehydration (think dark circles and crepey skin). Your keratinocyte (skin cell) is largely comprised of water, so the amount that you drink directly affects the size, shape and function of these. In addition to this, it also has a lipid (oil) barrier around it, which holds the water in place to prevent it from evaporating – causing dehydration. The combination of the two are responsible for a healthy protective outer layer - your acid mantle - without which many inflammatory conditions like Eczema, Acne, Rosacea, chronic dryness and general sensitivity can be left unchecked and allowed to thrive. Hydration is also important to allow for older skin cells to detach and naturally exfoliate efficiently –keeping the skin soft & supple.

Think of it like this; skin that’s lacking in essential fatty acids is always dehydrated, losing its shape & instead of being flat, it curls up very much like a dried up kitchen, allowing for bacteria and allergens to invade it, and also for active ingredients to be absorbed unfiltered and too quickly, which can irritate the skin and contribute to reactive skin conditions. It also creates micro-gaps for more water to escape, exacerbating the problem!

The importance of water, combined with a pure, good quality Essential Fatty Acid supplement is paramount for achieving optimal results from both your active products, and any treatments you under-go in Salon. It makes sense – if you have a healthier overall environment for your cells to thrive, any further stimulation they undergo will be efficiently received – which means faster response to treatments and much longer lasting results.

The DMK EFA Ultra supplement is formulated with only the purest quality ingredients possible – Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Mekabu Seaweed (think Fucoidans!), Evening Primrose Oil and Seabuckthorn (Omega 3,6,7 and 9). Your body does not have the ability to create its own Essential Fatty Acids, therefore it relies solely on what it can receive through diet and supplements.

As well as taking Essential Fatty Acids internally, using them topically has a wealth of skin benefits. DMK Seba E Oil and Herbal Pigment Oil both promote a healthy protective barrier and when mixed with Herb & Mineral Mist, they mimic your skin’s own protective barrier. This is excellent for combatting that environmental dryness and redness as we head into the cooler months. Seba E is fantastic for re-establishing a healthy oil and water balance in more sensitive, reactive skins, and Herbal Pigment Oil has the added benefits of lightening any darkened, sun damaged areas whilst increasing your cell turnover. This is very beneficial for skin that has a lot of build-up and feels rougher in places. If you are unsure which category you fall into, one of our Skin Therapists will be able to recommend which one would be best for you.

So, again, drink that water & take your EFA’s! They are essential for improving ALL skin conditions plus you will genuinely feel and look much better for it.
